World Energy Day: A Global Initiative for Sustainable Energy

14 February, 2025

Every year on February 14, we celebrate World Energy Day, a global initiative designed to raise awareness about the crucial role energy plays in our lives and the imperative need to adopt sustainable and responsible energy practices. This day serves as a reminder that the way we produce, consume, and manage energy has a direct impact on our environment, economy, and overall well-being.

With energy consumption rapidly increasing worldwide, it’s essential that we shift towards more efficient, cleaner, and renewable energy sources to combat climate change and reduce environmental degradation. One of the most promising alternatives to traditional fossil fuels is biomethane, a renewable energy source that can significantly contribute to climate change mitigation. The European Union (EU) is already taking proactive steps, estimating that by 2030, biomethane production could reach 350 TWh, which would prevent the emission of approximately 110 million tons of CO2 equivalent, contributing significantly to the EU’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55%.

LIFE CHANDELIER: A Groundbreaking Project for Sustainable Biomethane Production

As the world focuses on finding sustainable solutions to energy challenges, LIFE CHANDELIER stands out as an innovative project aimed at enhancing the production of biomethane while simultaneously contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Innovation with tangible results

LIFE CHANDELIER’s core objective is to develop an efficient, traceable, and cost-effective method for producing biogas and vehicular grade biomethane. The project leverages cutting-edge blockchain technology for traceability and compliance with EU sustainability standards, specifically the ISCC EU 202-5 and 205 certifications. The initiative focuses on using small-to-medium scale plants to process agri-food wastes—such as olive pomace, almond hulls, vine shoots, and cereal straw—into renewable energy.

The LIFE CHANDELIER project is designed to enhance the anaerobic co-digestion process of these complex organic materials, combining them with other agricultural waste, such as pig slurry and slaughterhouse waste, to maximize biogas yields. Through this innovative approach, the project not only optimizes biomethane production but also addresses a growing waste disposal issue, offering a sustainable solution for rural areas.

Additionally, LIFE CHANDELIER incorporates a novel biogas upgrading system based on hydrophobic membranes, which is a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods like water scrubbing or chemical absorption. The project’s innovative technologies will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%, making the biomethane production process not only more sustainable but also more economically viable.

Validation and scalability

The biomethane produced through LIFE CHANDELIER will be validated as Bio-CNG by testing it in a High Duty Vehicle (HDV), covering 120,000 km during the project’s duration. This validation is a key step in demonstrating the real-world potential of biomethane as a clean, alternative fuel source for the transportation sector.

LIFE CHANDELIER also incorporates digital modelling to optimize the production process, making it easier to replicate and scale the solution in other regions with different feedstock types. This scalability ensures that the project’s success can be translated into broader applications, further promoting the use of sustainable biomethane in rural communities.

In conclusion, LIFE CHANDELIER is not just a technological innovation—it’s a crucial step toward achieving a sustainable energy future. As we celebrate World Energy Day, projects like LIFE CHANDELIER exemplify how innovation in biomethane production can help us reduce our carbon footprint and create a cleaner, more energy-efficient world.
