Mercadona visits the Valderrobres biogas plant 🔬🌱

28 February, 2025

Last Thursday, January 27th, we had the pleasure of welcoming Mercadona for a technical visit to the Valderrobres biogas plant, where the LIFE CHANDELIER project is being developed. This visit was initiated by David Orenes Ponzoa, Waste Manager at Mercadona, with the aim of gaining first-hand knowledge of the innovative technologies used in the project and exploring possible synergies for sustainable waste management.

A key meeting for innovation in waste management

During the visit, attendees had the opportunity to gain in-depth insight into the objectives and progress of the LIFE CHANDELIER project, which aims to convert agri-food waste into biofuel for heavy-duty vehicles. The purpose of this visit was to understand first-hand the technology behind manure digestion, agri-food waste processing, and the potential use of biogas for heavy transport vehicles.

The visit not only provided a detailed explanation of the technologies implemented in the plant but also sparked an engaging discussion on the feasibility of integrating these solutions into Mercadona’s waste management model. The possibility of collaboration among the present stakeholders opens new opportunities to enhance biogas utilization in industrial and logistics processes, reinforcing more efficient and sustainable strategies.

Collaboration and synergies between leading companies

The meeting was attended by representatives from Genia Bioenergy, Eurecat – Technology Center (project partners), and Mercadona, who shared their experiences and knowledge in waste management and renewable energy production.

Attendees:

Mercadona: David Orenes Ponzoa, Lara Rozalén Estrada.

Genia Bioenergy: Iván Torrijos Álvarez, Rafael Sierra Vázquez.

Bioseval: Mariano Mínguez Micolau.

Eurecat: Enrique Lacasa Ferrer, María del Pilar González, and Víctor Ortiz i Roca.

At LIFE CHANDELIER, we would like to thank all the participants for their interest and commitment to developing sustainable waste management solutions. These initiatives and meetings are crucial for continuing to drive innovation in biogas and advancing towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly circular economy model.
